  17. <p>    Sitting side by side last week as Poland's Senate
  18. reconvened for the first time since it was abolished in 1946
  19. were Solidarity leader Lech Walesa and Communist chief General
  20. Wojciech Jaruzelski. If their propinquity reflects the vast
  21. changes overtaking the country, so does the scheduled arrival
  22. of George Bush this week, paying the first U.S. presidential
  23. call in Warsaw in twelve years.

  25. <p>    Although Jaruzelski has renounced his own election as head
  26. of state, it is he who will greet Bush, because the new mixed
  27. government has been unable to settle on a presidential choice.
  28. Bush said he planned "to inspire but not to incite" during his
  29. two-day visit. Yet last week in an interview with Polish
  30. journalists, he suggested that the Soviets unilaterally withdraw
  31. their 40,000 troops stationed on Polish soil; Soviet President
  32. Mikhail Gorbachev called the idea "propaganda." Bush has vaguer
  33. ideas about how to lend Poland more practical help, but aides
  34. warn that any U.S. plan won't be accompanied by a "potful of
  35. money."
